Part of Huang Tse-hsiu's "High Mountains, Ancient Affections" series, the 1956 photo was taken in the central Taiwan range, a bird's-eye view of a valley between two mountains and the hills beyond. Startlingly, trees and vegetation are sparse, a disturbing sight. Thus, Huang chose to shoot the disquieting scene with maximum depth of field, naming the work "Treeless Peaks." The photograph reminds us to cherish our natural resources, to preserve and protect our mountain forests so that Taiwan will always be worthy of the name "Formosa," island of beauty.
