Women wore durumagi on top of jeogori and chima, and men
wore durumagi on top of jeogori and baji. The word “duru” means “all around,” and durumagi means it is completely closed up, “closed all around.” Hence
the word “durumagi” is an apt description of the garment
as it lacks both a back slit and a side slit.
Although women could wear only jeogori and chima to show
propriety, men could not wear only jeogori and baji. Such
attire for men was considered a sign of disrespect, and they
