Nuihaku, nō Theater costume

Nuihaku theater costumes, which take their name from the technique of embroidering with gold leaf imprints, were generally worn by woman characters, either as an undergarment or wrapped at the waste with hanging sleeves. Europeans began importing costumes used in Nō theater as early as the 17th century, fascinated by their refined quality and lavish decorations.
