O-yoroi armour, sword and quiver

Tachibana Museum
Fukuoka-ken, Japan

O-yoroi, or Great armour, was early Japanese armour, appearing in use primarily from the 10th to the 13th centuries. The armours at present or modern period are commonly displayed in an erected state while O-yoroi is considered to have been kept in a folded state. We can find the same state of Japanese armours in the picture scroll depicting the scenes of the Mongol invasion in the 13 the century. This is because the cuirass of the armour before the 13th century was not bound at the upper and lower parts of nagakawa (a part of cuirass which is wrapped around the torso). This enables the armour to be folded.
