The piece entitled Obelisco (Obelisk), which came to form part of the museum’s collection in 2003, is worked on kiln-dried sabino wood, an important tree in our culture, which Contreras worked using the old carving technique. Through a careful hewing process, he gave shape to the figure of a symbolic object of pagan origin and roots as old as the tree, in order to erect a monument to nature. Instead of basalt, quartzite or granite, common in this type of commemorative constructions, he used wood with its knots and fibers in a rigorous, sober and moderate work.
