Mathematician, general inspector of bridges and roads (Ponts et Chaussées). Repeater then professor of geometry at the Ecole Polytechnique, he gave a considerable boost to nomography; set of methods intended to replace numerical calculations by a simple reading on a graphic table called "abacus". He published numerous scientific works, but also in a completely different field, vaudevilles under the pseudonym of Pierre Delix. Member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1922. President of the French Mathematical Society (Société mathématique de France). Corresponding member of the Académie dei Lincei
