Froebel’s method spread from Germany to the U.S. in the 1870s, and his block sets came into widespread classroom use. Gift No. 4 consisted of a 2-inch cube that divided into eight rectangular blocks. Children could use them as walls, fences, and furniture; learn about fractions, proportions, and forms of measurement; and create symmetrical and asymmetrical designs.
