Soviet troops entered Yugoslavia at the request of the National Committee for the Liberation of Yugoslavia. On 28 September 1944, the Belgrade Offensive started. Yugoslav people greeted Soviet soldiers as their liberators. The Red Army’s casualties in the Belgrade Offensive are estimated at 35,000 (killed, wounded and missing in action).
