The workrooms of the Hirsch apothecary in Öhringen provide a fascinating insight into the workings of an 18th century pharmacy. The workshop-cum-salesroom was used to hold consulting appointments and sales meetings, but also to prepare medicines and mixtures. Because the room was frequented by the public, it had to be representative as well as functional. The Öhringen Officine is an extraordinary example of Baroque fittings: It contains extensive and elaborate wall-to-ceiling shelving with numerous drawers and storage compartments, crowned with gilded putti and heraldic beasts among sumptuous foliage, and decorated with floral elements.
