In 1899, the California State Legislature approved a “moisture-proof, fire-proof, and burglar-proof” vault to be built in the basement of the capitol building. This blueprint, dated December 16, 1910, shows the general dimensions of the vault as constructed. Identification Number: MC2:10-116
Also pictured is the original key to the vault. This metal vault key was held in a drawer outside of the Archives Vault for many years, allowing members of the public to retrieve records at will. As a result, hundreds of records went missing. Identification Number: 96-12-93 (9)
