The north facade is the outcome of 33 years of work. The octopus sculpted on the west corner marks the end of the work. On the opposing eastern side, the sum total is recorded: "10,000 days, 93,000 hours, 33 years of trials, more obstinate than me, set themselves to work." Richly ornamented with animals and mythological creatures under the watchful gaze of Adam and Eve, the north facade is reminiscent of the postman's final work, his Tomb of Silence and Endless Rest, in the cemetery of Hauterives.
