From the Artist: This collage started out as a response to the Covid-19 shutdown. I was thinking about the social isolation people were experiencing, the fear, and the empty streets. Closed offices and blank windows along the blocks. Still, people came together daily, leaning out their windows to celebrate the essential workers. Then, there was the murder of George Floyd. The streets were no longer empty as people came together – mostly masked - to express their outrage. The Black Lives Matter movement was brought forward with renewed attention and action.
I don’t generally work in collage – photography and ceramics have been more my thing. But in February, I had started a class in collage and when things shut down, I wanted to use what I was learning and work with my new materials. On the Street Where I Live is a combination of my photographs, figures and textures from newspapers and magazines, and pieces of fabric and corrugated cardboard.
