In 1923, Song Ong Siang published One Hundred Years’ History of the Chinese in Singapore, a highly detailed survey of Chinese life in Singapore and an original source still extensively used by researchers. The book is more specifically about Peranakans; the preface quotes Lim Boon Keng in defining the Peranakan Chinese as local-born and English-educated, who “constitute a class by themselves”.
