Ernesto Miranda was arrested by Phoenix, Arizona police and after interrogation confessed to the kidnapping and rape of an 18 year old girl. Miranda was not told of his right to legal council during his interrogation process. The resulting case of Miranda v Arizona ended with the U.S Supreme Court ruling that suspects in police custody must be made aware of their right to remain silent and request legal council.
