This image was taken by the Viking Orbiter 2 on AUgust 30, 1976. These iamges were taken from aproxiblately 4000 kilometers above the surface and show the nothern hemisphere and melting polar cap. The supposition was that this was both frozen CO2 and water ice. This was taken on day before the Viking Lander 2 was ttargeted to land at 47.89 degrees N Latitude and 225.86 degrees W Longitude midway between the north pole and the equator.
