Other Side of the Tracks

This painting may very well be titled “Drives with Artists,” as the ice truck that Ralph Fasanella once drove through Westchester County is featured in the painting, parked below the Westmore Hotel on the upper right. Fasanella knew his route well, and understood how working-class neighborhoods like Harrison and Mamaroneck were isolated from upper-class suburbs like Rye, seen in the foreground, both geographically and culturally. Train tracks split the activities of the wealthy, represented by the private home and country club behind lobe-like gates, and the scattered vignettes of sociability of the poor above. At the center a small group of travelers wait at the train station, suggesting escape from the oppressive environments on either side of the tracks.
