In 1988 the last wild otter in the Netherlands was killed by traffic. With this accident this species became extinct in the Netherlands. To give the otter another chance more than 30 otters were released in the provinces of Overijssel and Friesland in 2002. Since then things have gradually gotten better for the otter. Otters are appearing in a growing number of places, although unfortunately many of them still fall victim to the busy traffic in the Netherlands.
