Our Japanese pagoda tree

This tree is one of our oldest. Kew has been its home since it was planted here in 1762. Don't be fooled by its name, though! The tree is found in the wild in China and Korea (not in Japan). The white flowers that grow on this species can be used to produce a yellow dye for silk or cotton.
