The central sculpture in carved wood represents Our Lady of the Assumption to which the chapel was originally dedicated. The lacework and crown of angels around are a fine example of Portuguese baroque carving. The composition shows a clear allusion to the Assumption of Mary – The Virgin Mary being taken to Heaven by the angels of God.

- Commission: This chapel was founded in 1636 by Luisa Frois, benefactor of the Society of Jesus. Originally it was dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, which is the subject of the central image. Later it became the "Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception and Relief for the agonizing people" when this brotherhood moved from the College of Santo Antão to the Church of São Roque.
