The Virgin leans his head slightly towards the Child, while Jesus, in a three quarter view, with physiognomy of an adult, is blessing with His right hand and looking the viewer. According to the legend, this form of representation was brought from Constantinople to the city of Kazan (Russia) in the thirteenth century. With the invasion of the Tartars, the image disappeared, being discovered in the sixteenth century, after the release of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible.
