Out with a Bang seeks to reimagine an urban and architectural model that works with levels of ownership, privacy, sharing and jurisdiction that are different from the public/private divide which shapes most contemporary cities. The project is composed of six projective scenarios for new domestic forms inspired by two architectural archetypes developed in South Korea in the past few decades: the goshiwon, or boarding house, and the bang, or function-specific rentable rooms. Out with a Bang envisages a goshiwon model that is punctuated by the insertion of large scale bang complexes — spa centers, gaming rooms, meeting rooms. The scenarios seek to learn from the contemporary South Korean city to formulate projects that can fit in other metropolises as well. Ultimately, we see the bang as a lever to challenge conventional domesticity while looking for new forms of agency in the design of our spaces for living.
