English Heritage

The earliest defence of the hilltop was a near-rectangular enclosure dating to about 1000, now known as the lower enclosure. This was a chalk bank which was subsequently faced with a wall believed to be around 3m thick. There was one known entrance into the Saxon enclosure on the east side.
