Oz Achterburgwal is an etching done by the Dutch artist Cornelius Brandenburg (1883-1954) in 1920. The Oz in the title is an abbreviation for the word Oudezijds or Old-fashioned. The location depicted is in the center of De Wallen in Amsterdam, today this is the cities red light district. Short Biography: Cornelis (Cor) Brandenburg was born in Wormerveer in 1883. He studied at the Drawing School for Craft in 1890 and at the Academy for Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He started out as a ceramic painter at ‘de Distel’ factory from about 1903 but by the 1920s he was well established as a graphic artist. Brandenburg passes away in Amsterdam in 1954.
