In this pamphlet from 1871, Florence Nightingale, the social reformer and pioneer of modern nursing, writes introductory notes to 'Lying-In Institutions', and proposes an organisation for the training of midwives and midwifery nurses. Ten years later, Matron's Aid, or the Trained Midwives' Registration Society was set up by Louisa Hubbard to address the need for the better regulation of midwives and midwife provision.
