This golden spittoon, called paidon, originally belonged to a whole set of paraphernalia for betel nut chewing. It is from Riau Lingga, on the island of Sumatra. The red color and motif used on this piece suggests Bugis cultural influence, which was brought to Riau Lingga by Bugis nobility, in the 17th century. The name for the complete set would have been pekinangan.
