Painted fan with figures viewing cherry blossoms

Utagawa Kunihisa IIc. 1870

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

This skilfully crafted folding fan is an important work by the master Kunihisa, a famous ukiyo-e woodblock print maker of Yokohama in the late 19th century. The surface is finely painted with figures in traditional costume set against a panoramic background. The sticks and guards are of ivory, the latter inlaid with so-called Shibayama technique.
