Kamale Kamini (meaning The Lady of the Lotus) is an ancient folklore about a merchant on a very long sea voyage to Sinhal. He travels many miles but loses his way in the middle of the ocean. Then a beatiful lady appears sitting on a lotus in the middle of the rough waters, who looks like a Goddess because of her beauty and her demeanour. Soon after sighting this wonderful and miraculous appearance, the merchant finds land and reaches Sinhal. The Goddess is believed to be a folk deity who with time merged with Puranic deity, Chandi, an incarnation of Durga.

  • About the craft: Patachitra of Bengal is a tradition of visual storytelling. Stories are painted on long scrolls by the painters known as Chitrakars who gradually unfurl them while singing the stories. Patachitra is known for its bold colours, lines and strokes. The songs are called Pater Gaan. One of the fascinating aspects of Patachitra is the use of natural colours derived from local sources like fruits and flowers. The Patuas paint and sing on various themes like mythological tales, historical and contemporary themes and social issues.
