The scene is centred on the body of St Joseph, with an angel supporting his head and the Virgin praying. On the left is Christ in the act of giving a blessing, behind whom stands a figure in the shadows with an open hand in a gesture of fear, counterbalanced on the right by the Archangel Michael.
