It was in the 1950’s that a move towards experimentation with pure abstraction gathered force.
Gaitonde’s introspective nature discovered the engagement with colour and texture which was unobstructed by narrative or content and a satisfactory way to deal with his canvas surface. A Zen like meditative approach engulfs his paintings. ‘Painting’, executed in shades of pale gold and ochre, with contrast of browns, blacks and ivory, is a prime example of Gaitonde’s meditative approach. Nebulous forms float freely on a delicate field of golden ochre. Intricate textures created by delicate scratches on the painted surface are keenly balance and compel the eye to travel over the length of the entire canvas to absorb all the details.
