Landscape of Sintra

Alfredo Keil, the son of a German couple living in Lisbon, was a passionate and compulsive painter (author of “A Portuguesa” assumed as national anthem in 1911), photographer, collector and curator.
The German education of the painter is one of the reasons that point to some originality, in particular his sensitivity to the landscape of romantic origins. He studied painting in Munich and Nuremberg and later in Lisbon.
The ʺseasʺ and ʺnebulaeʺ are his most significant themes. Alfredo Keil was a compulsive and passionate painter. He took great inspiration in the landscapes of the places where he temporarily lived, namely Sintra, Colares, Cabo da Roca and Ericeira.
A cozy nature with leafy groves and sturdy trunks, in small loose strokes, give way to tree trunks that attract Keil's attention. The beauty of this natural aspect becomes poetic. Keil contributed to the representation of the natural scenery of Sintra as few have done.
