Museum of Brisbane

Museum of Brisbane
Brisbane City, Australia

This dress and skirt are hand quilted silk cotton twill with cotton flannelette padding and cotton mull backing. They are embellished with kantha stitch and zardoshi embroidery. Kantha stitch is a simple running stitch, often used in quilting. It was originally developed for the purpose of reusing and layering old materials. Zardoshi is an opulent form of Indian embroidery encompassing a variety of needlework and traditional techniques, mostly passed from father to son with secrecy.
