Pan and Syringe

Roman artist (Giuseppe Chiari?)First thirty years of the 18th century

Pinacoteca Stuard

Pinacoteca Stuard
Parma, Italy

The painting depicts the myth of Pan and Syringe when the god Pan is chasing the nymph Syringe. The painting comes in companion with "Hercules and Onfale" of the same size and with a contemporary carved and gilded frame. Critics agree to attribute the two early 18th century paintings to a Roman circle and specifically to the workshop of Giuseppe Chiari.
