Hans BornemannMiddle Age

Hamburg Archaeological Museum

Hamburg Archaeological Museum
Hamburg, Germany

The panel painting was donated to St. Mary's Cathedral by the Cathedral Provost Johannes Middelmann and is regarded as secure work of the artist Hans Bornemann from Hamburg. When the cathedral was pulled down in 1804/07, the picture found a new home in St. Peter's Church. It shows Ansgar with the insignia of the mitre. As promoter of the first church in Hamburg he carries the model of St. Mary's Cathedral. The benefactor is kneeling next to Ansgar. He ordered the panel painting as an epitaph to himself as well.
