Taken during the Second Opium War, this 180- degree panorama of Peking (present-day Beijing) seems both to witness and to celebrate the takeover of the Chinese capital by British and French troops. The view is centered on the Da Qing Gate, a passage leading to the Imperial City. The monument to its left is the west wing of the Wu (Meridian) Gate, the main entrance to the Forbidden City.
