Illustrator and artist Grace Drayton had made a name for herself by the time she created the Dolly Dingle paper doll series for "Pictorial Review" magazine in 1913. A Philadelphia newspaper had run her illustrated series Bobby Blake and Dolly Drake; she collaborated with her sister, an artist and writer herself, to produce "The Terrible Tales of Captain Kiddo." And she had already created the iconic images of the Campbell Kids for the makers of the easy-to-prepare soups. She used a variation of the round-faced, wide-eyed Campbell Kids for Dolly, her pals Billy Bumps, Joey, Sam, Mary Lamb, and her many other companions. From 1913 to about 1933, Drayton created more than 200 paper dolls in the Dolly Dingle series.
