The Old World Swallowtail, Papilio machaon L. ( Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), is a temperate species. Taiwan is located at the southmost boundary of its distribution, and the population on the island is an endemic subspecies, P. machaon sylvina. The subspecies was not common, but not rare either? in 1960-70s, as revealed by the late lepidologist Baw-Sing Chang’s collection deposited in this museum. It is probably endangered now as there is no witness account or collecting record in the field nearly a decade.
