Naval Museum
Madrid, Spain

Pair of Spanish flintlock pistols, made by the gunsmith Pedro Esteva, as indicated at the top of the barrel. The flintlock's ignition mechanism works when the frizzen strikes the flint. This creates sparks, igniting the gunpowder that would have been loaded into the pan beforehand. A flintlock pistol is a type of firearm for individual use that was used in naval warfare for naval boarding and close combat.
