The two figures formed part of a Crucifixion group in the old cathedral of Turin, which was reconstructed in the late fifteenth century by Bishop Domenico della Rovere. The crucifix has been identified as the one now in the church of the Carmine in Turin. The sculptor of the work was probably local, but much influenced by northern models. The figures have highly expressive features, and this is also emphasised by their gestures, particularly in the case of St John: the pain he feels can be seen in his face, which is overcome by suffering, and in the way he puts his hand to it.
