This eye-catching feathered pelerine with long vertical panels at the front must have been worn for adornment, at the same time as keeping the wearer warm. The clever use of feathers gives the perlerine an unusual and exotic air, although quite a few survive in museum collections and all the birds could be found in England at the time. Feathers from peacocks and a range of domestic fowl have been attached by hand to a stiff cotton fabric, which in turn is lined with a softer cotton fabric covered by tufts of white down.
