Spain and Portugal were intensely Catholic in the 17th century, the heartland of the Counter Reformation that set out to reinvigorate the Roman Catholic Church. Traditional jewellery often incorporated Catholic religious symbols, such as the cross and heart.

This elaborate filigree heart-shaped pendant is typical of Spanish traditional jewellery from Galicia in the northwest region of the country. It was probably made in the great pilgrimage centre of Santiago de Compostela. The fan shape at the top is derived from a stylised bow, but may also recall the scallop shell which was the mark of pilgrims to St. James’ shrine.

The original owner would have worn this pendant on a ribbon, strung through the loop on the back of the fan at the top, and tied at the back of her neck. She would also have worn matching earrings. It was bought for £1 2s 6d at the International Exhibition, London, 1872.
