The 1859 model replaced flintlock pistols in the Cavalry of the Civil Guard, although both were used simultaneously for some time due to the time taken to distribute the new weapons. Both were then replaced by the Lefaucheux 1863 revolver. With a rifled bore and 14.4 mm (0.57") caliber, this system worked in the same way as long guns of this kind, using a percussion cap to set off the propelling charge, rather than a piece of flint.
