Jeolgutgongi is a tool used to pound substances contained in a large mortar or a bowl. It is also called dogudaengi, dongguttae, or dogubang. A pestle is a tool used to pound grains placed in a mortar or a bowl. It is also occasionally used to make rice cake. Pestles vary in materials and shapes. In the central regions, pestles with round ends and a narrow waist for easy grip are used, while in the southern regions, pestles with only the handle carved narrowly are used. Pestles with a stone driven into the end are used in some areas. Stone pestles are used to pound grains in large quantities or hard grains. Although this type of pestle can pound twice the amount of grains than wooden pestles, it is difficult to use due to its weight. Therefore, metal and stone pestles are generally used by strong men.
