Ernest Herbert Pitcher was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 8 August 1917 aboard the Q-Ship, HMS Dunraven.Q-Ships were vessels disguised as merchant ships that were actually well-armed and intended to lure German U-Boats to resurface, allowing the Q-Ship to fire at the submarine from close range. Pitcher commanded the 4-inch gun crew during an encounter with a U-Boat, maintaining his position despite heavy fire until it was blown up, resulting in him being wounded.
