Pheasant Tail Ceremonial Fan

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This arch-shaped fan was used for ceremonies. Multiple layers of paper were initially attached on a frame, then red silk was further adhered, with upper tail of pheasant and two common pheasants and flowers painted along the edge and at the center. The reverse side would originally have had a painted peony on a blue silk background, but only traces of pigment and background color currently remain.
