Phoenix: Continue is from Joe Mooney's Phoenix series, a group of sculptures comprised of welded heavy gauge stainless steel organic forms, mounted on copper-coated mild steel bases. Mooney used a plasma-arc cutter and TIG (tungsten inert gas) welder to create these works. Named after the Egyptian mythological story of a desert bird that was consumed by fire and then resurrected from its ashes, this series of works evolved on a more personal level from the artist’s ongoing experience dealing with both a stroke and the onset, remission, and continued struggle against leukemia.

Joe Mooney received his early artistic training from Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1978 and subsequently studied at Alfred University, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1980.
