This photo collage of the Frick children was assembled by their mother Adelaide Howard Childs Frick—-her handwriting identifies the children's ages to the week or, in some cases, the day. The collage specifically documents the childhood of Martha Howard Frick who died of an unknown illness, at age 5, in 1891. A number of the photographs were taken at the lavish Union Square studio of Napoleon Sarony, who was known for his portraiture—especially of celebrities like Sarah Bernhardt, Mark Twain, and Oscar Wilde.
