Photographs of Santal puppetry taken by Ravi Kant Dwivedi (b. 1954) in 1988, in the Santal villages of Navasar (District Dumka, Jharkhand), Uttar Shiala, Dhanshara, Kashpukur, Benedanga, Kakash Nonedanga, (District Birbhum, West Bengal) and Baghmara (District Burdwan, West Bengal). Ravi Kant Dwivedi is an artist, photographer and filmmaker based in New Delhi. He has documented rare practices and arts forms such as Jadupatua paintings, Dhokra metal craft, the Gajon ritual of Bengal, the mask dance of Rajbanshis, the rain-invoking rituals of North Bengal, the design of fishing traps and boats in the east coast of India, and tribal and folk puppetry of Eastern India, especially the Chadar Badar puppetry of the Santals.
