Henry Brown Blackwell (1825-1909) was a social reformer and co-founder of the American Woman Suffrage Association. Upon his marriage to suffragist Lucy Stone in 1855, the two authored a "Marriage Protest" which was later published in abolitionist newspapers. This "Protest" declared their conviction that marriage is an "equal and permanent partnership" and that a wife is an "independent, rational being". Stone (1818-1893) was the first woman in Massachusetts to earn a college degree and the first to keep her maiden name upon marriage.
