One of the most moving of Annibale’s etchings, the Pietà emphasizes the sorrow of the Virgin. The artist treated the subject in paintings, drawings, and prints. This edition was published by Nicolas van Aelst, the Belgian engraver and publisher, who likely printed a later state of Annibale’s plate in the 16-teens.
