Gyeongju National Museum
Gyeongju-si, South Korea

This pitcher piece was excavated from the subordinate outer coffin of the wooden chamber tomb in stone mound, to the southwest of Gyeongju. The head and two arms of the figure have been broken off, but he appears to be a warrior, judging from the quiver on his right and the sword on his left. The armored leggings and dashing posture of the warrior on his horse are expressed in great detail. The horse’s mane, eyes, nose, and mouth are realistically depicted, and it is fully equipped with various equestrian accoutrements, including reins, saddle, saddle flaps, horse belt, and pendant?but no stirrups.
